SCT X3 /SF3 Issues?
So I ordered a SCT tuner with "custom" tunes from American Muscle, and received the device today. After reading the CD instructions I installed the "custom" tune into my car. Needless to say it felt like it had lost a good bit of power, and the speedo was still reading too fast (GPS verified). I returned the car to the stock tune, but havent driven it yet since its now stoming here; i really hope that my missing power came back. I cannot even locate the option to change the rear gearing to correct the speedo! All that are available are the timing adjustments, WOT Fuel, high and low speed cooling fan temps, and neutral and drive idle speed. I just emailed American Muscle regarding the experience, as I am extremely dissatisfied; hopefully they will do something to resolve the problem.
Anyone else have a similar experience with an AM "custom" tune, or with the SCT tuners in general?

I think I may sell mine as well....might work better with a tune from someone better, but im not going to mess with it at this point. I drove the car this morning with the stock tune back in it and the car was back to feeling good.
Juan, if you want to buy one let me know. I'll sel you mine and you can just get a tune from a known good tuner.

Re: SCT X3 /SF3 Issues?
Sux you had issues. I have the SCT xcal2 and have no problems with it. I tried a mail order tune with it and my car ran pretty bad (pinging, etc). I got a dyno tune and that took care of the pinging, etc. I just wish I had more mods to make the dyno tune more worthwhile.

Re: SCT X3 /SF3 Issues?
Thanks Bronson. I received a response to my email, which is admirable. Unfortunately they said that the device cannot adjust for the axle gear ration on any Cobra pre MY99. The SCT user guide says differently, so there is some misinformation somewhere. AM would like to work with me to adjust the tune, but i dont know that i even want to mess with it now. The car is back to running good without it, and it will not fix the speedo calibration. I see no point in buying yet another device to fix that when this one is advertised to do so on my car.

Re: SCT X3 /SF3 Issues?
Doesn't your car need a new speedo gear or soemthing like that to fix the calibration? I know my device can adjust the axle ratio but it is a different tuner and different year car...
Maybe upgrade the firmware on the tuner?

Its conflicting info..SCT's user guide says it will allow the user to adjust this parameter on 96-01 Cobras, the person from American Muscle that responded to my email said it will not do that for a pre 99 Cobra. I do not see in a field for it in the adjustments on the device. Regardless, i dont believe I will be keeping this tuner so it isnt a huge issue. SCT does need to fix their manuals to reflect accurate information though, IMO.

Well than how would a SpeedCal work? Does it not modify the signal going to the processor?? Even your post specifies a SpeedCal for 4.10 gears....lol. I dont believe it is cable driven in the sense that the cable goes to the speedometer, because it doesnt. I have had my cluster out and there are no mehcanical cables, only two electrical connectors. Maybe the speedo and trans are electronically connected? No doubt there is a drive gear in the trans that translates this info, but im not sure it goes to a speedo cable.
Look at page 8 of SCT's user guide....under 96-01 Cobra.

Im just going by what ive seen...if it wont work then it wont work. But if thats the case, then someone needs to correct their info, as its slighly misleading, IMO.

Re: SCT X3 /SF3 Issues?
Brian,
what I was saying is that if the tuner does not ahve an option to change the speedometer, than its not going through the ECU. Therefore if it cable driven, or its electronic standalone, than it has to be fixed by a new plastic gear rather than ECU recalibration.

I understand that.....never thought there was something wrong with the device itself. Although there is something wrong with misleading information from SCT stating that it will allow the correction for axle ratios in 96-01 Cobras when it will not.
No response yet from the individual that emailed me this morning, whom i emailed back. I doubt AM will take this device back, even though it does not perform as advertised. So im either going to have to give it away for a crack deal price or be stuck with a $379 box that will go on the shelf and collect dust......not real happy about it at all.

Re: SCT X3 /SF3 Issues?
Brian, is the device capable of supporting more then one tune? I know in the diablo predator like I have there are "can tunes" or generic performance tunes depending on octane of fuel. Then there is also a slot for a custom tune. I know you said you tried loading the custom tune from AM. Is there just a regular 93 performance tune that you can load up? If so try that, you will probably see a mild increase in performance. Also you can try manually increaseing timing for a performance gain. When my car ran on the motor, then can tune didn't make a whole lot of difference untill I maxed out the timing. Even maxing out the timing on that device was still safe because of the limitations in the parameters adjustablility. Hope this helps.

Yep...can hold three custom and then it has the strategy tunes where input what mods you have etc. Tried that, wasnt impressed either. Maybe my car just runs good as it is...lol. The guy from AM wrote back and said to try reloading the tune, that sometimes that helps...wtf? This makes tuning with the PMS in the LX seem ever better than before.

I would agree to reload the tune one more time. I have heard about tunes not fully writing the pcm causeing corruption in the parameters. Your last and final option would be custom dyno/wideband tuning, but I don't know if you wanna go that route on such a basic street setup.
