Nice! Congrats! Looks like a pretty heavy buck. Did you weigh it?
I need to go out but I don't think I will have the time. My parents' land ain't even that far away...

Re: Went hunting yesterday...
haha, it was about 2pm yesterday afternoon, partly cloudy with a 3-5mph breeze out of the east. I had passed up 2 smaller bucks earlier in the day, a 5pt and a 6pt. We were making a drive and I was down over a bank a bit where the deer like to run off. One of my buddies ran it out to me. It came down the bank and stopped about 50yds away. I shot it right at the top of the front shoulder. He fell down right away and i fired off another shot just for the heck of it. I was using a savage 30-06 with remington core-lock bullets. My grandfather shot an 8pt that was a little smaller on the same drive about 5min earlier.

Re: Went hunting yesterday...
shotgun means you just gotta get a little closer to the deer. The county I usually hunt in doesn't allow rifles either which sucks. But my blackpowder gun is like a rifle anyway so I rarely use a shotgun anymore unless we are making drives or running dogs.5spd07gt wrote:haha, i dont know anyone that uses a shot gun for deer, WEAK!

Re: Went hunting yesterday...
Bronson, i know what you mean. when i used to hunt on base we couldnt use rifles either so i just used my inline muzzleloader which shoots just like a rifle for the most part. Never was a fan of using a shotgun for deer though. I've also never tried using dogs but i think its illegal where i hunt.
Zak, was it a whitetail? sucks it got away

Re: Went hunting yesterday...
I'm not a huge advocate of dog hunting either. When I was younger, some of the other people that hunted the land that we hunted were big dog hunters. So when they would run the dogs, if we wanted to hunt, we either had to go really far away from them or just join them.
I like to use my muzzleloader primarily too but a shotgun is useful when you are in a limited visibility stand like a thick swamp where you don't have many clear lanes to shoot through.

Re: Went hunting yesterday...
yah a shotgun wouldnt be bad for close range shots but i like to sling some out about 100+ yards, sniper style
