Engine Failure again... might be done for good
Well I finally started ripping into my engine...
Somehow after 400+ miles and 30+ dyno runs at 7000rpm the follower slipped off the valve stem and bent it clean over... all while simple cruising...

That sucks, Will! I figured something was up when you were looking for an adapter for a compression tester.

Damn man that sucks. Sorry to hear that.
I'm guessing the piston hit the valve. Any other major damage?

Well, if your engine building is as good as your picture taking, I see why you're having a problem.
Sorry to hear it Will, I'm sure you must be totally fed up by now.

Wow that sucks so bad. Was that the exaoust valve? It it could of been too much boost and the stem couldnt handle it. Do you have it camed? If it is it could be too much cam. If anything try looking for roller cams for the engine. That is if ur gonna get it fixed or get a new head.

It was hard to get the cam down in there, and it was too close to get it to focus right.

This is why I don't trust pump gas. I'm tuning with C16 and hope for the best.

So you've had a week to think about it. What is the game plan from here?
Try again but hope for better luck? Settle for less power? Give up completely? Use a 5.4L engine?

Re: Engine Failure again... might be done for good
no just kidding I didnt want it to go slower...
seriously though with my divorce and lawyers sucking the life and money out of me I have no money to fix it for a while. I think I am done for a long time.
Rocker is fine. Bent valve stem.

Duh sorry. My bad. Well im not ASE cert mechanic but from experiance you can prevent this. You can get the valve out urselve, And then order some tougher valves. Though id lower ur boost a little:)

Re: Engine Failure again... might be done for good
What valves did I have in there?
What Are tougher than Inconel?
15 PSI is high?
For a valve stem to bend like it did it had to come off the end of the follower or seize in the guide. Maybe lack of oil on the valvetrain, not sure as of yet. Or possibly the lifter for that valve was not getting the right pressure. Allowing it to be loose on the compression stroke.
With head studs its more of a job than just replacing a valve... and even when the engine is out, I am sure there is some valve seat damage and will need to be cleaned up. I do not have a multi angle valve grinder, as my Sioux valve grinder, and seat resurfacer, only uses stones not cutting tooling. So add a 1200 to get the heads overhauled. Add 200 in gaskets. 100 in valves. Possible hurt piston, which you have to buy 4 min... so add another 500. It's not the labor that I am giving up on... its the money right now. It's not my main priority right now. Lawyers are.
I've talked with a few mod motor experts and so far its fairly common for the followers to come of in high RPM engines, but ALL are baffled that it happened at such a low RPM.
This was a mechanical failure... that would have happened at vacuum or 1 PSI... It just sucks that it didnt happen on the dyno after tons of pulls. I get it and it fails. However I have been getting used to my luck.

Re: Engine Failure again... might be done for good
Best of luck with the rebuild and luckily there is no pressure to build in the winter months.
Concentrate on your off-road adventures or something. Do you still have a stock engine you can drop in while the powerhouse is out?
