Re: Just ordered my gears
You can try calling Excessive Motorsports in Manassas and see what they'll charge in labor. When I got mine done there almost three years ago, I paid about $300 for labor. They stand by their work and tell you to bring it back if and whenever you may have questions or concerns.
Getting the right set of gears is key! Chris (Excessive) installed my FRPP gears in March '07 (about 80K miles ago) and I've NEVER had any issues or whine I didn't mind paying $300 knowing it was done by somebody very knowledgable and having lots of experience with the S197 R&P swap.

Re: Just ordered my gears
Adam had a shop in Kingsville. They did detailing and repair. The detailing side was call The Recon Shop. The Repair side of things was called Fiveology. The repair side of things took off and they stopped doing detailing. About a year or two ago they moved to a bigger shop in Notthingham.PRO50SC wrote:Fiveology? Never heard of them

Re: Just ordered my gears
Ford Motorsport Gears do not whine... and if someone says that gears in the S197 whine normally they are retarded, and do not know what they are doing. They are taking shortcuts and not setting the pinion depth right, and not taking the time to shim the proper mesh.
I have heard many shops that charge and all they do is change the gear and slap the old factory shims right back in. I can do that in about 30 min with a lift... if you want it to whine...

Re: Just ordered my gears
I just opened my gears and I guess I got the set made by Motive cause there is not a Ford symbol anywhere on them. I was trying to get a pic of the numbers on the pinion gear but my camera aint good enough. But they are still 4.10s regardless. They look like they are kinda dirty.

Re: Just ordered my gears
Motive are still good gears. It just take a little more work/experience to get them setup right.
Enjoy your new gears.

Boss281 wrote:Good point. JJ at Woodbine Performance always has a good price, and I'm going to be talking with him about an across the board MDPF club discount shortly. Also Bob Thompson over at the Mustang Club of Maryland does great work at reasonable prices too, and he even has a subforum on their website for putting in your request and he'll quote work for you.
I think we need to start a thread/sticky for recommended folks and shops, with comments from folks that have had good work. I just did a quick scan and didn't see anything. For example, for myself, I might put:
John White:
S197s - suspension components, shifters, intakes, cams, brakes, exhaust header to mufflers, minor electrical (gauges, etc). No differential experience. All driveway work with ramps and jack stands. No lift. Some experience wth first gen SN95s, some Fox Body experience with engines, engine swaps, tranny swaps...
Thanks John, I currently have 2 gear installs lined up now for the next 2 weeks.

Re: Just ordered my gears
So I just called Excessive Motorsport and they told me $700.00 which includes Parts, Tuner Chip, and Labor. Does that sound right?

Re: Just ordered my gears
Not sure about the tuner chip but for parts and labor should be in the 600 range. so add in the chip it sounds about right.

Adam is fantastic!!!
I took my car to Adam and not only did he do a perfect job he fixed a few things that another speed shop screwed up and would not confess to. Adam will continue to get all of my work
he re-installed my headers with locking header bolts (other shops came loose)
he took my flywheel and pressure plate off and balanced them perfectly (other shop said the vibration was in the trans)
while the k member was down he fixed the motormount bolt that was stripped, when the eurathane motor mounts were installed
I was so happy to have these things fixed that I had him weld in my sub-frames connectors, install an aluminium driveshaft, install the O/R h-pipe, install the caster and camber correction plates, new infinitely adjustable Tochiko shocks on all 4 corners, check the valvetrain, clean the intake, and imrc plates/runners, put a new idler pulley on it, install a cold air kit,
I will contact him soon to do my gears from 4:10' to 4:30's and the best thing is I trust Adam
he does all the part purchasing (right around the the same cost I could find anywhere else) he documents everything and gives clear reciepts. When he quotes a price I say OK! no questions because I know it will be done meticulously yeah I like Adam!

Yes. Gears and install is about $525-550 alone.Dominican7 wrote:So I just called Excessive Motorsport and they told me $700.00 which includes Parts, Tuner Chip, and Labor. Does that sound right?

WOW, $700! Why not just by the parts yourself and then get them installed for $300.

Re: Just ordered my gears
Swell idea, but labor on the gears alone is $300 there... Then you add in the cost of the chip/tuning and install of that...07caligtstang wrote:WOW, $700! Why not just by the parts yourself and then get them installed for $300.
From American Muscle:
FRPP 4.10 Ring and pinion-$165
Motive 8.8 Bearing Kit-$75
SCT Eliminator Chip with tunes-$270 (have no idea about the older Stangs and this could be wrong, but is the only chip AM lists)
Parts=$510

Re: Just ordered my gears
If you got Motive gears, that's a pretty sh*tty look by AM, who is usually awesome. I ordered my 4.10's from BuyFordRacing.com, and DRRummel is right, mine had Ford logos stamped on them.
I thought that the speedometer had to be adjusted mechanically to compensate for the change in gear ratio? Unless your car is an automatic, and your shift points have to be changed with a chip, there's no earthly reason I can think of that shops are throwing in the cost of a tuner/chip with a gear install.
I paid $315 for my 4.10 install (labor, shims, gear oil, etc) plus the cost of gears ($150 from BFR). I had them done at Performance Evolution in DE since I live there. Perfect install, zero issues.
Best of luck man.

Re: Just ordered my gears
I'm with John...if you dont have anything for the install to begin with, $700 aint too bad. I already had a tuner to change the gear ratio so all I needed was the gears, bearing kit and labor (bearing and labor twice since the first place did a poor job).
Andrew, he doesnt "have" to get a chip but his speedo and odometer will be off. He either needs a chip or a tuner to change the gear ratio in the computer. The older mustangs I think had a speedo gear to change the ratio.

So the New Edges have their speedometers/odometers adjusted electronically? I thought pre-05 it was all mechanical...good to know.
