LT's vs. Shortys Empty LT's vs. Shortys

Post by RTW0223 Sat Sep 25, 2010 3:49 pm

So as many of you know I have had longtubes on the car and ever since the install have been having clutch problems. The clutch cable must touch the long tube. I have checked it out many times and thats the only way it can run into the fork. So, i know many people are interested in longtubes. Would i save myself from installing clutch cable after clutch cable (already on my 3rd) buy switching back to shorties and would it be worth it?

I have run a few lt's on my fox and none had issues with clutch cable. Please take a pic how you have it run. Secondly you can get heat shield tap that withstands 1700 degrees. I run that on any wires close to my hotside turbo kit. Cool to touch after install.

i think they are for an automatic... I do have heat wrap on the spot where the cable is. And i do not have a picture of the setup. But the way the cable comes down from above, it should go straight into the fork right? wrong. the tube is in the way and the cable must wrap around the tube, thus putting another curve in the cable and resting on the tube

i ran mac shortys and they were junk and a lot of mac exhaust products dont have a good bend to their pipes. reason why i got another flowmaster exhaust last spring. fits perfect like they always have. my bbk LT dont touch anything except my steering shaft at first but i had that modified. if you can post up some pics. if it were me and i had that much problems with longtubes id just switch back to shortys. i hate repeated headaches!!

Longtubes seem like more of a pain then a gain. I will never install them.

Agree, I ran shorties on mine and also the lt's make the exhaust quieter for some reason.

I told you to switch to shorties or a different set of LT'S right after we installed the test cable and figured what was causing the stiff pedal, if your pedal gets stiff again, it'll stain that firewall area again and you don't have much left up there to work with.....if I were you I'd switch back to shorties, which is one reason why I sold the lt's on my 89 and bought a set of equal length shorties, unless you have a build with enough power to justify LT'S then shorties will be just fine Smile

Corral is your best bet for some cheap shorty headers.

LT's vs. Shortys Empty Re: LT's vs. Shortys

Post by RTW0223 Sat Oct 02, 2010 9:44 pm

So... Went a different route than planned. dont get mad!!!! lol I bought brand new bbk longtubes and matching h pipe. yup i did it. I talked to 2 of my friends who have these and they said they have no problems (related to them touching the clutch cable and the steering shaft--aaron--) so i took a risk-- which as all men, we should-- Smile

So they came in and i met with 5 people from the car club here, took from noon til about an hour ago.... I got them in... the headers fit perfect, not near the cable and not interfering the steering shaft. However, the h pipe gave me some trouble... not fitting perfectly.

BUTTTT, in the process of jacking my engine up i managed to break a power steering line so that spilled everywhere... gonna need to get a new pump

and driving on the way home, my speedometer is jumping around like crazy and my oil pressure reads 0.

I will have exhaust vids later. not sure how well they are though.

Spedo cable might have gone bad, I have heard from other 5.0 guys that your spedo jumps around alot before the cable goes bad. You didn't do anything electrical in the last couple days did you?

Well between jacking the engine up, exhanging out the headers and h pipe some wires might've been unhooked. but the speedo goes into the tranny... will have to look at it when it stops raining.... thats blacksburg for ya
