289/302 question Empty 289/302 question

Post by top_back_5.0 Sun Jan 30, 2011 1:40 pm

Ok, here goes. i'd been looking for a 302 to rebuild in my garage and drop in my '89 vert.

however, my dad just reminded me he has a 289 out of (i believe) a 67 mustang he got in a trade.

so heres my question: what are the real differences between a 289 and a 5.0?

from my understanding, the main differences would have been the stroke, and the 289 would have had a flat tappet cam.

is there anything thats gonna keep me from making a 302 crank, heads, and roller cam work with a 289? my intention is to rebuild the 289 slowly and surely, as my bank account allows.

I would just go with a 302 roller motor, honestly.

Here is one in Waldorf for a measley $250!

Here's a shortblock in Fredericksburg for $150:

thats what i was thinking myself, but i figured try to use the 289 if i could, since its just been sitting around collecting dust.

well, if a 302 roller is my best option, could anyone give me a roundabout price on what a 289 with a rebuilt c4 attached is worth? its a complete motor and trans. why not try to recoup some of the losses of picking up a new(used) motor by selling this 289? i figure SOMEONE on here has to need a 289 haha.

if you try to use the 289 and a roller cam you will need retro fit lifters and they are 450+ dollars, = cheaper to find a complete 302 roller motor

You would get more from scrap metal place, then selling it to someone

Completed from carb intake to oil pan, , head, head covers, clutch, flywheel still attached, water pump, distributor is still there as well but needs new cap. I would still recommend rebuild. I was told it was a stock rebuild with a low cam when I got it. It was sitting in a shed for a long time. Only run for an hour. Like I said, I still recommend a rebuild. No pulley.

I have pictures, text me at 240 246 4894

i would have thought it would have had some value to someone trying to do a numbers matching resto, considering a 289 hasn't been made in 40 some years, and there were alot less 289 blocks than 302 blocks.
