'85 4 banger electric fan
So the electric fan went out on my mom's '85 4 banger coupe, and being as how its not a V8, i can't seem to find a (stock) replacement fan. I don't have an issue upgrading to an aftermarket one, but after all i've read on swapping a 5.0 to an electric fan, i'm a little concerned about the amp draw of an aftermarket fan. Anyone have any recommendations on which fans to check out, or any experience swapping an old (carb'd) 2.3 to an aftermarket fan? thanks guys

the aftermarket fans at autozone and such draw less than 10 amps. Ive got two on my mazda on a 20 amp relay and zero problems. A 16 or 12 inch fan will work just fine. There about 60 bucks i think

Should I be able to wire the new one directly to the old wires? Its just a positive and negative wire. Or do I need a relay and a thermal probe and all that good stuff I've read about on 5.0 installs? Granted a 5.0 is a clutch fan, and this 2.3 is electric factory.

Cut the old connector off and wire it in. Pay attention and test which direction the fan is going before crimping the wires. The fans can blow or pull so you need to make sure ur pullin air. Idk if the fans come with the install kit so i would double check and if not pick up the install kit. I think they run like 10 bucks.

Also are you sure the fan is dead? I would check the temp sensor used by the ecu to controle to fan cut on and off. It may have a electric fan thermistor thats connected to the relay that trips the relay above the set temp.

Re: '85 4 banger electric fan
I don't think there is an ecu. The car is carb'd. And I'm not entirely sure the fan is dead yet, but as soon as I get home I'm going to check fuses and connections and all that.

check to make sure there is power gettin to relay. And try to see if you can switch the relay with a paper clip. If you can look else-where. If not replace fan or check the ground

Re: '85 4 banger electric fan
In those there should be a fan control box at the steering column at the base of the dash. Right behind the panel that comes off to access the fuse panel. Usually towards the PS side of the column. These fans have a tendency to draw more amps as they age and the relay box burns out. Take a jumper right to the battery for the fan and see of it works. If you need a fan it should be the same on the 4 banger through 93. I got a practically new one for my SVO from the JY off a 93 that I got the roller cam for my SVO from. There should be a coolant temp fan switch on the lower intake by the DS shock tower. I take the wire off and put it to ground also to check the relay circuit through the fan. The relay box and wiring can be another whole nightmare... If you need any more info/help LMK. I'm pretty good with the Fox Bodies.
