HID Help!! Empty HID Help!!

Post by Bethelism Thu May 10, 2012 8:50 am

Ok, some of you already know about the issue, but I figured I'd branch out, because it's been a couple of weeks, and I've not been able to solve the problem. I'm not able to drive at night, and I actually got pulled over the other day. Gotta get this fixed!!

I've got OEM GT500 HIDs in my car, and they suddenly decided to take a crap on me. They are cutting on and off, but when they are on, they are strobing (a cool effect, but not conducive to driving in the dark). The bulbs work, obviously, since they turn on. The ground is good, and there is power to both buckets. According to Bob, he states that the relay is fine, since I have 12v to each ballast. However, in my research, all issues that are similar (but different, since they are aftermarket kits) state that this is a relay issue.

These were installed with the OEM GT500 headlight harness. I can't vouch for the install, as they were the morons who effed up the rest of my car.

I need to fix this, boys and girls, and ASAP. Suggestions? Comments? Advice?

if they were morons who f'd up the rest of your car, then retrace the entire harness make sure all connections are proper. thats where id start first. Look for corrosion. That's where my HIDs took a crap on me.

Does this happen all the time, meaning once the lights are on, after a period of time will they start to flash? Is the relay in a spot you can see/hear/touch? If so, when the problem occurs, toiuch, listen to the relay to see if it's clicking on and off. If it is, replace it. It's the only common denominator to both headlights. I doubt both ballasts are acting up at the same time. Plus, if it's a regular 4/5 pin relay, they are cheap enough, just replace it. Have you tried taking the HID's out of the equation and running your stock lights? That would also tell you if your issue is in the factory harness or possible head lamp switch if the problem is still there. If you need to talk to me, hit up Suz for my cell unless you already have it. Feel free to call me chicky!!! HID Help!! 422332

I'm not sure where the heck the relay is... The wiring is pretty screwy. I can't take the HIDs out of the equation, as they are OEM, not aftermarket. It's the Ford OEM HID housing, not a kit.

Like I told you earlier... its the resistor... If they used the GT500 harness its inline on the harness right before it connects to the Y that goes to the headlights.

If they used the stock harness, they would have needed to put a resistor inline. its a 5volt resistor. If more power is applied it will make the balasts overload and act like a strobe. It will eventually take the balast out entirely

Easy way to find out is multimeter at the balast, and prior to the Y to the lamps.

It is the GT500 harness. I'll have to take it apart this weekend, so what am I looking for with the multimeter at the ballast and Y? And when I find it, what do I do?

Make Mike come over before he leaves with his multi meter. If he has time tomorrow maybe we might run out there.

I've read all those, but thanks, Will. I haven't had a chance to get in there this weekend, but I'm hoping to some time this week before I leave for OC. Freaked out about going to the beach with this issue. Maybe if you're free after work I can head out your way some time before Thursday?

Eh, only Burger Bitch. Might just have to tackle this one on my own if I want to get it done before the beach.
