5.0 Oil
I'm going to be doing an oil change this weekend, and I have seen various oil viscosities used... so what do you guys recommend?
Re: 5.0 Oil
I don't know what weight you need but I can get Amsoil at wholesale prices

Re: 5.0 Oil
Dear lord Ryan! Please tell me that you have been changing the oil all this time that you have had that car.
I recommend motorcraft oil that is recommended by Ford on the "710" cap!

If you haven't been using synthetic then I'd highly recommend you save your money and use either motorcraft of valvoline 10-30.RTW0223 wrote:synthetic or no?
Syntheticis great but you have to use it forever as been my experience from an ole jet engine mechanic.

mobil 1 10w30 synthetic for 8 years now. lasted through all the abuse JPC and Vortech put on the car throughout 2009 and didnt lose a drop. plus its on sale alot before mobil 1 i used Napa synthetic oil. worked just as good for my 80 mile daily commute at the time when it was a stocker

haha i cant remember the oil that i put in it last wether it was synthetic or not. What is the difference...never really understood it
Re: 5.0 Oil
Synthetic oils tend to have a longer life before the breakdown in lubrication protection. I still change my oil every 5,000 miles regardless.
Dino or non-man made oils, will be fine for 3-4,000 miles but should be changed more frequently as they will breakdown sooner then synthetic.
most important is using the recommended oil weight, specified by the manufacturer.
I believe it's 5 quarts of 10/30

Re: 5.0 Oil
If you are on a budget I'd recommend just using regular oil and write it down and keep it regular 3-5K miles. If you've re-built your engine then Mobile 1 or a semi syth. would be a good oil to use. Just one thing is once you start keep using it and you'll be fine. I mean 6 in 1 and 1/2 dozen the other on the subject. Regular oil changes are a good thing because once you get the funk out of your motor and crank case you'll see the difference at 3-5K miles.
Good luck

Agreed. Most people wont go over 5k miles on a oil change anyway. Conventional oils today can easily withstand that, so why would you want to spend the extra $ to be in the snythetic club? The thing that everyone misses is the fact that oil gets contaminated with fuel and moisture. That`s why they tell you a certain mileage or time frame you should change it.
I work for Howard County and they use Castrol. We change our oil every 5k miles. Some vehicles have over 200k with no mechanical problems.
I use Castrol GTX 10w30 in mine.

Re: 5.0 Oil
Bob I got caught up in the higher end oil deal a long time ago because I saw how the military bangs on jets and it was proof that snythetics work. I know that if you keep your maintenance up you can go the distance on any grade of oil these days. On my 90 model I won't use snythetic because i don't know what the original owner used and since it is older I'll take my chances on valvolene or GTX and save a few.

I agree. If it gets abused then synthetic is the way to go. We use were using conventional 2 stroke oil in the blowers and week wackers. We were rebuilding them every year because they were worn out. We now use Amsoil and can go for 5 years or so before its worn out. Synthetics are the way to go on something thats going to get ragged on.

Re: 5.0 Oil
Well another gremlin is ethanol and it is hella hard on two strokes and rubber fuel lines. Maryland that I know has only ethanol fuel except maybe over on the eastern shore.
I've heard good things about Amsoil but haven't tried it yet.

Re: 5.0 Oil
Think conventional 10w30 like GTX will be just fine for you. Dont ask me about my oil changes... Ethanol is great if youre car can handle it.
