Porting Modular 3V heads?
I just got a set of spare 3V heads from a bud that stuck Livernois ported heads in last week. I can buy the same Livernois heads, studs, gaskets for about $2700, but I was wondering if anyone knows of a shop around here EXPERIENCED with the 3Vs? Seems to be rare in these parts.
I'd want oversized valves obviously...I'm ditching the Comp cam for something a little wilder as well...

Give JLP a call. I read somewhere that he is working with machinist to do all his work.

He built my first motor and at no fault of his, I spun bearing do to a blown seal in my turbo.

Re: Porting Modular 3V heads?
Thanks. I actually checked JLP (and several other local tuning shops) recently and they don't do in house port and polish jobs on 3V heads. Lots of folks do the 2V or even 4V but getting 3V help is tough. Even JPC down in Glen Burnie farms the work out. Once you start farming it out the price goes up, and you might as well spring the $$ for Livernois heads. I have the money, I just don't want to spend $3k for them!
Fox Lake appears to have an inexpensive but reputable PnP on 3V heads, but that's with stock size valves. Making me nuts...

Re: Porting Modular 3V heads?
Hey Mike, yeah, you'd think the big shops would be doing this but they don't--they farm it out. They'll build the motor for sure, but save the head work for Livernois and other name brand head shops.
I have a guy just a few miles from here that knows fox body heads like the back of his hand. I supply parts and supplies and he does the PnP, valves and seals, etc. $900 the last time. I need to find someone that can do great work like that for under $1500.

Fox Lake is a great company. 1599 for a set if you give them your heads.
I can only give you the info that I researched when I was looking into heads. Take it with a grain of salt since I am FI. Now... Fox lake, Proline, and Boss330 all said that the 1mm larger valves was pretty much worthless as far as flow numbers to cost. They were seeing less than 5cfm increase with the 1mm larger valves.

Damn! You get the heads, Scott gets the cams and I possibly will get the C&L CAIBoss281 wrote:I just got a set of spare 3V heads from a bud that stuck Livernois ported heads in last week.
If what Will says is correct, I don't believe I'd spend the extra coin for the 1mm larger valves IF I HAD MONEY, I'd drop in the S/C 5.4 and mod that to 550+ RWHP for a reasonable price. Zak is well on his way there

Re: Porting Modular 3V heads?
John, you know me. I'm NA all the way. When this motor blows I'll either put in a built 5.4.
I hadn't heard that issue with the valve size. If true, and I'll research that a bit more, then Fox Lake, MMR, Sutton, BBR, etc all have PnP heads with stock valve sizes, at around the $1500 mark.

Not too long ago they had a special for $1400 but I missed the window. Right now they are at the top of my list.

Yes, he was selling the Livernois stroker and heads. Sold the heads, but still selling the stroker.

Re: Porting Modular 3V heads?
When I had access to all of my grandfathers machinist tools I would do my own porting. We had a flowbench that we would test. My first port job was on a pair of EJ7's.
If I still had access to the flowbench we could do our own hand porting.
