VA doesn't do that...yet. It makes sense in the fact that it would be rather easy to go up and peel off the year sticker and put it on your tag to make it appear you're still legal.

Actually that's called the sticker number, and it's only that way for personalized tags, it's a random number for all other tags. But yes if it's saying another year than the registration that he's pulling up, he's gonna notice it.
