Vinyl Replacement
I'm thinking of replacing my magnetic blackout panel with a "flat black vinyl" instead (the rocker stripes are gloss though). My current panel has shrunk due to the elements and has a huge wrinkle in it. Are there any side effects to having vinyl installed instead? Not a bad deal for $14.99 and I have read it's a quality product. I've looked at panels, but I like the look of the simple black. Seems to fit right in, IMO.
I'm open to any suggestions between matte or gloss.

Re: Vinyl Replacement
Everyone loves matte, I'm partial to gloss myself (probably because I have a black car).
Let me know if you'd like any help laying the vinyl. I've heard horror stories, but with the right materials and some patience, you'll be fine.

Re: Vinyl Replacement
I ordered it this afternoon. Can't wait to get it in and put it on. Did you use windex or a soap mixture? I actually put on my own rocker stripes but I used windex and was almost an all day event and it's still not perfect lol. I read on mustangforums that a soapy water mixture works better.

Re: Vinyl Replacement
Soapy mixture! Water, couple drops of Dawn dish soap and a capful or 2 of rubbing alcohol in a squirt bottle. I used that for all of my vinyl and never had an issue!

For each 20oz of water:
1/4 tsp of BLUE Dawn dish soap
1/2 tsp of 70+% rubbing alcohol
1/4 tsp of BLUE Dawn dish soap
1/2 tsp of 70+% rubbing alcohol

Re: Vinyl Replacement
Did you get the matte or gloss? I'd say matte would go better eventhough your rockers are gloss. Another thing on install, is to remove the rear faux gas cap as it will make it much easier as it won't be in your way.

Re: Vinyl Replacement
I got the matte. It shipped out really quick. Too bad its going to rain this weekend I don't have an indoor place to install, plus it would need to dry after install too.

I thought about painting but then I didn't want to do anything permanent.

Re: Vinyl Replacement
I laid down the vinyl, it was easy compared to the rocker stripes I did.
I'm not too thrilled with it. The emblem cut out was a little too big, so the fitment was not perfect and I ended up having to roll the edges. From a few feet away, it looks *ok* but when you get close enough to get a top down view, you can see a little silver around the top side of the emblem.
I don't want to go magnetic again and I can't find a decklid panel that is simple as this. I may think about the painting route once I get tired of this vinyl or if it wears out.

Paint is the only answer! I know a guy that does awesome work.... Reasonably priced too.
Re: Vinyl Replacement
I have thought about the honeycomb, but I have thought about the 9 bar grille. I don't want to or plan to, but it's just another one of those thoughts that linger in the back of my mind.
What is the average cost to get it painted?

Re: Vinyl Replacement
Right haha. That one grille we saw was tore up. Plus it looked unclean behind it, and you have to paint everything behind it black.. lots of cleanup work.

Vinyl is a great way to a low cost "test" if you like a particular design or not. Being that you like the look and didn't spend a lot on the vinyl. Painting that little bit on the trunk shouldn't be too bad...$100 or so???alkemist wrote:I have thought about the honeycomb, but I have thought about the 9 bar grille.
