Block/trans separator plate? Empty Block/trans separator plate?

Post by rgoddard Tue Jun 05, 2012 9:36 am

I have run into an annoyingly loud rattle. I have traced it out the best I can I thought it was maybe a small exhaust leak until I stumbled on to some people saying it was the Block/trans separator plate. They apparently have a tsb on this but even though its under warranty Im sure im out of luck since the car has mods. Some say to use rubber washers, urethane sealer or silicone. Some others say RTV sealant. 1 guy even cut up a bike inner tube and put it in between and said it hasn't come back. What I want to know is this safe? I know at some point I am gonna need a clutch so I will get a new plate installed then but that could be awhile. I don't want to use something that would cause problems later with removing it for the clutch. I was told the problem is the plate flexes hitting the flywheel so a redesigned one is available that has a dimple that puts pressure when installed to keep it flat and from rattling around. Just looking for some thoughts.

You sure you want to do that? I don't see any problem in doing that I just thought after last night you probably didn't want to see that car again for a while lol!

fairly common TSB... the bolts in the dust shield were never installed on earlier s197, and later ones didnt have locktite

the plate doesnt come in contact with the flywheel or you would have bigger issues

I used to have pictures of mine... cant find them but mine would rattle on deceleration and hard acceleration

its two 10.5 cap bolts on the dust shield. you can get from the dealer.

Thank you for your help! I wouldn't mind it as much if the car were old but it only has 34K on it to me thats still pretty new.
