Ok so you all know that i have my white 99 v6er. With the MAC catback from the y pipe. Now i want to turn it into a true dual.. I know there are many ways to achieve this so i was wondering waht you guys thought would be the best way to do so.

I know I could possibly buy the v6-v8 conversion kit featured on americanmuscle
...
or i could have a shop fab it up
..

waht do you guuys suggest taht would make this sixer louder more powerful and cost effective?

i received this from the guy at stangmods.com....

"Hi Ryan, your best bet would be to go to an exhaust shop and see if they are willing to do some custom work. Once they are willing, I would just have them create a short H pipe assembly. What they will need to do after that is cut your y pipe right after the catalytic convertors and cut your cat back right before the mufflers. Then, they would just need to weld in the H pipe assembly they fabricated. This would probably be your most cost effective solution. Just make sure that the shop you take it to has experience with custom exhausts. "

does anyone agree??

That sounds pretty legit. I know a guy down in VA that does custom exhaust work like that pretty cheap. That would be a hike for you. Other than that, I'm not familiar enough with exhaust on v6s to tell you one way or the other.

well either way, Ryan calm down, i was in this phase for a while too. You realize how much money all this stuff you want to get is right. First it's with the wheels and now exhaust. When you call them be prepared to hear big numbers

yes you hear big numbers but research everything and do it right the first time...the exhaust wont be that much if he finds the right shop...i can cut and weld but i cant fab it correctly or else i do it for him true duals help 40218

none the less its a much wiser idea imo to get an exhaust that can be unbolted easily....otherwise it will be like alex's and be one full piece....a pain if one has to pull the exhaust to do any work bc one will have to cut the pipes...get mac kit or find someone/a shop that will make an h pipe that will weld to the shorty mid pipes there and that will bolt up ball and socket style to the cat back...then if the car goes in the shop the tech wont have to cut it or charger more time or parts than needed.

as always research is key...ive been researching the 5.4 dohc conversion and t56 swap for a long time now...now i just need the money. dont take everything learned form one person as the truth...chk multiple sites/forums/suppliers for the answers.

H will sound better. the purpose of the X pipe is to evenly distribute the exhaust and it also creates a vacuum in the x which boost the horsepower but in a V6 it won't do much. I'm looking at prochamber's, they sound the best.

Post by prodrifterx Fri Nov 07, 2008 5:20 pm

problem is that its not which sounds best....because the prochambers were designed for 4th order firing....v6 uses a 3rd order firing which changes the amplitude, frequency etc. so same kit on v8 versus v6 will not come close...not to mention the pipe diameter, consistency, muffler style and location, tip size, header type, and whether or not cats are present give the specific note/sound one desires. personally i dont believe the prochamber will sound as good. id say one can make their own prochamber basically out of a 2in/2out muffler by cherry bomb or flowmaster.

the x pipe will not be as loud at say idle compared to the h-pipe...for the manner that the x-pipe forces crossflow of the exhaust pulsing, helping the next cylinders pulse or exhaust evacuate the chamber and pipe. however the x-pipe typically shrieks/screams compared to the h-pipe at the high rpms. the h-pipe will make the pulsing of the exhaust more noticable at idle (like older cars or cars with cams...the lope is mor noticable i guess one could say). i would do shorty headers (they probably are 2.5" collector), mated to an aftermarket or custom or stock mid pipe, and drop the size to 2.25" prior to haviong a ball/socket connection for the catback, with a catback of 2.25" for duals to keep some backpressure. 2.5" duals on a GT flow exceptionally well. nonetheless, as the exhaust cools the pipe size doesnt need to be as larger to keep same backpressure. this would give one a good sound, noticable without being overbearing or losing its muscular sound. id go with chambered mufflers (1 or 2 chamber) and not glasspack/straight thru mufflers on the v6.

referencing alot of my research via web and MM&FF magazine research....dont believe all things read tho w/in a magazine....variables change on any given circumstance....they did study on v8 gt's...however the basis and nature (lack of better words) of any engine is that the firing order depicts most of the engines capability of sound waves.

yeah i took my stang to this place National Budget Muffelr right across from the Harford Mall in Bel Air (Harford County) and the guy said $250 to cut before the mufflers (leaving the bolt ons) and after the cats to run straight through pipes with one inbetween connecting the straight through pipes

is this good price? and how big of a difference will this fabricated h pipe be compared to the y pipe settup i have now????
