Staggering tires

I'm going to try to get new tires and rims as soon as I can. Need to get rid of stock tires. Been thinking about going the staggering route. Are there any negatives aside from not being able to rotate the tires? Does it wear down the life of the tires faster?

I'm looking at deep dish FR500 for the rear 18x10:

Those rims look good, though I don't know the weight of them, they'll play a part in my choice too.

As for tires, looking at Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position from Tire Rack. Going with all season tires since this is my DD..

I've gone through American Muscle for 3 cars now and never had a problem. 18x9 and 18x10 is a good combo, staggering the tires never had any noticable effects to me... have 17x9 and 17x10.5's on the cobra now.

I am running the black FR500's 18x9 18x10 setup and I liked it at first but now it is just growing old. I just want to save up and get a set of CCW's or True Forged wheels.

Nothing wrong with running the staggered setup for DD! I've been doing it for the better part of 3 1/2 years with no problems I am running the 18x9 18x10 FR500 and love them! I run the Dunlop SP Sport 9000 275/40 up front and 285/50 out back. I love them, but they are not a winter tire. They do really well in the wet...above 40 degrees!

The tire you have in your post looks to be a decent tire, but is somewhat limited on size selection... I'd say the best combo for those wheels would be 265/40 (26.3 tall/10.7 wide) up front and the 275/40 (26.7 tall/10.9 wide) out back. With a staggered setup and a 10" wheel in the back, you may be happier with a wider tire such as the 285. I see Bridgestone makes a 285/40...the Potenza RE050 (27.1 tall/11.4 wide). It also is available in the 265/40 for up front. Dang, just noticed that is a Max Performance Summer tire

I've dealt with tirerack numerous times over the last 10 years and have never had a problem and dealt with discounttire once with no problems as well. A buddy of mine has oredered several sets from discounttire with no problems.

So you run the same height on the front and back? That would probably help making the speedo adjustment much easier too. I don't plan on working on the suspension or adding anymore performance mods. Do you know how much the rims weigh on their own? I don't race at the track or if I go to the track, it will be just for fun, but I don't want to add too much dead weight to the car unless it won't affect the performance I have now. The stock Pirelli's scared the crap outta me after I wiped.. so I'm going to need something that can handle winter driving also without having another set of wheels. LOL, these rims won't look too goofy on a Roush front, would it? I have been known to be a bit tacky by other people.. :flower:

This was another tire I was looking at a couple weeks ago. People complained about road noise after the tires had worn in for a bit, but the new reviews don't state any loud road noise.. hmmm

In my opinion you already have the 4x4 look. front tire should be 275 and the rear either 285 or 305. Don't just instantly go with American Muscle. I am not downing there customer service. You just might find a better price if you search around.

I have 305's and love em... but I went with a 29" tire to fill up the wheel wells

That's true about the 4x4 look.. At one point I considered lowering but with the chin spoiler on now, I thought it might not be such a great idea with the roads in these parts. Any lower and I'll come and plow your snow lol.

Do you have any other suggestions for sites to get the FR500's? I ordered plenty from AM and they have been great to me, but I am willing to get the same product from any other business that has lower prices.. and free shipping is a plus.

I really wanted to do 285's in the back but the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus tire I'm looking at do 285/35/18 and start to get very expensive. I prolly sound really wussy putting AS tires on my car, but it's my only transport and after wrecking it once, it was enough for me.

I am not sure where the rims may be cheaper, but AM will price match the "to your door price" if you call them. It may be worth it to do that to get the rims sooner since they are only in PA. Just an option.

The way John says you drive your cobra, your tires will dryrot before they see any tread loss...

I have 112 miles on mine tyvm... in 09, ) so far in 2010... I just pushed it down the hill, I now have a 1/4 mile on them this year.... yet its sitting in my neighbors living room now...

I run totally different height tires on my car...they are 2.5" difference in height!
Committing to AS tires, you really cut your options down for staggered sizes in 18. You won't want a 285/35-18 as it is about 1.2" shorter than your stockers! The 285/40-18 is only a few tenths shorter than stock. If are dead set on getting AS tires you should get deep dish 18x9s all the way around with 275/40. I don't know what the FR500s weigh as I mainly got them for looks. I can tell a huge difference between the weight of the 235/50 on the fanblade compared to the 285/50 on the FR500!!!!! The car is much quicker on the stockers, BUT doesn't handle anywhere near as good.

Good Luck though, I got my setup through American Muscle, decent joint to work with.....and I went with the recommended tires............However my wheels are not Deep Dish, I wasn't going that route.....it's not my bag baby ;p

275/35-20 (10") rear 255/35-20 (9") front with no issues, just check the wheel offset and get the right set. Ask Laura about that...

Well, now I'm looking at Nitto 555's lol. They seem to be extremely popular. Knowing they are a summer tire, but they seem pretty alluring for those dry months.. Anyone have the joy of using them in the colder weather and/or in the rain? Or just experience with them lol.

Also how is handling and cornering with this setup? My mustang don't corner well to begin with having stock suspension, but just curious what it would do to it.

I ran the 555 dr's for quite a while. Pretty decent tire. I'm not in the habbit of driving my car in the rain but the couple times I got caught in the rain they seemed fine. And that was w/ most of the tread gone.

i am picking up the 555rs for the rear. 315/35/17 ( i think). the 555rs are probably the most popular dr for the street with the cobras. decent reviews in the rain too. prob not great for a dd though

I had the NT555 on my car and they were good in all areas except for near/below freezing and snow! They aren't meant for that and it shows quickly! I couldn't even get around well in a light dusting of snow a few years ago, but just this Tues/Weds, my OEM BFGs did really well in the 3 or so inches that were on the ground. Ask Ed how the NT555 is in the snow and I'm sure you may see some colorful language The Dunlop SP Sport 9000 puts the NT555 to shame though!
