Friend's 01 Cobra Empty Friend's 01 Cobra

Post by nicholasa631 Fri Jul 11, 2014 11:54 am

So my friend's 01 SVT Cobra is finally back up and running. He replaced the water pump, intake manifold gaskets, water pump housing and gasket, and also got yet another coolant tank. It turns out that the tank that the first shop had put in was made for an 03-04 Cobra with a super charger and had a hose that would of gone to the super charger expansion tank, but since my friend's car does NOT have one the hose was left hanging which meant anytime pressure built coolant would piss out everywhere and his system would start to over heat. Now with everything replaced thus far it still over heats slightly such as when he really gets into it, the highest the needle goes is about 3/4 then will slowly come down to normal. There is still the slight smoking issue but that is more then likely the valve seals, but those will be replaced in due time. I hope he can make it too one of our cruises

Wow just wow. A shop really did that? Left it hanging? Name of shop please so I make sure no one goes. Did he flush the engine block out? My brother has his car overheat pretty bad once it actually caused a build up in the block of this crap that slowed the flow and surface area so it wasn't do its job. I am assuming he checked out the radiator and thermostat? Coolant could also have a large air bubble in the system.

Well the full story was BEFORE the rebuild of everything he put stop leak in his radiator which was working then he was in an accident and basicly his entire front end was replaced. So the thermostat got sealed shut and the shop just filled his system and sent him on his way. Well his car over heated and took it back, they fixed it but only filled the system not full flush, the FINAL thing found was the pressure from the thermostat being sealed shut popped his freeze partly out. So to make sure full cooling system was good he replaced everything.

I know it's a pain in the ass but I would probably disconnect it and full flush everything.

I was when everything was replaced coolant system wise. Now just one last set of gaskets and she'll be perfect. I look forward to mine and his grudge race to settle who's car is faster lol

still could have a head gasket issue, under heavy acceleration cylinder pressures are up and it could be leaking compression past the area thus super-heating cooling system

Well, no more over heating issue at all, my buddy only had his tank filled and I guess he had forgotten about the bleeder cap and when we opened it, the hoses were only partly filled so we did a fill/bleed at 1030. After an hour drive and hard acceleration no overheating issues at all

Very nice! So glad you guys got it straight! We need to cruise soon. Maybe food involved? We need to keep mustangs and cobras on the road!
