100K maintenance needed - Spark Plugs ??? Empty 100K maintenance needed - Spark Plugs ???

Post by ndnboy Thu Apr 19, 2012 4:30 pm

Sitting at 103K now so its time for some maintenace, i see plugs, coolant and PCV are called for, did I miss anything?

Has anyone done there plugs? I have seen on other forums that it could be a huge PITA, plugs breaking off. Is it better to take to the shop or can anyone provide input, DIY, thx.

what we have done is bring the car in crack the plugs 1/8 a turn and pour a tablespoon of carb cleaner/inj cleaner in the hole and let it sit overnight , cleaner works it's way down threads and loosens carbon up, this is what ford suggests per tsb, they actually use a ford cleaner of some sort.

I've been hanging out for 20k miles, scared to do my plugs... Ford wants $450 to do them, and they don't guarantee they won't break them off. It's $1000 EACH to fix if they do.....

I do them. In fact I have the tool to remove them even if they break. Fortunatly, I have`nt used the tool yet. Have`nt needed to. I found the best thing to do is use common sense and only apply pressure that you know is`nt going to break them off.
Ill do them for $200.

Thx for the info, thought it would be a normal plug swap until I saw all the post on MF, wasnt thinking it would be an all day/overnight project : (

Do these cars have a PCV ? See I have to do the coolant also.

That's what I was thinking... your plugs are one piece design. No worry for breaking them.

I have taken brand new cars and pulled the plugs just to put aniseize on them. Precautionary step...

Do the new 5.0 use two piece plug design?

James, you should be good to go. I dont think ford put the 2 piece plugs in the 5.0's. 50k would be a good call anyway. If anything pull them soon and put some antisieze on the threads.

There is a thread on another forum that says you can tell which plugs are in the 4.6 by the part number on the coil pack, not sure if thats true, haven't looked. I just hit 50K and am thinking about changing them out, the carb cleaner down the plug is probably the smartest thing you can do.

I've had Motorcraft plugs sitting in the garage collecting dust for nearly two years now, because I also am scared of breaking some! I know Ford eventually got their head in the game and got away from the two piece plug by the middle of the '07 model year...

I'd love to be able to feel confident enough to change them on my own, but I know mine may be a PITA since she's sitting at 118K miles now... Perhaps a trip up to Bob's garage will be in order in the future! Besides...I've never been there yet...

I did my own spark plugs on my mustang and my F150 as they both have the troublesome 3V aluminum heads. I also have the Lisle tool for broken plug removal. Don't sweat it. I'll stop by and help you. Just have Coronas ready.
I only broke 1 plug on the truck and the tool was real easy to use.

Oh and I dont think I would use carb cleaner, I would spray WD-40 or 5-56 in them and let it soak over night or longer if you can before you try to get them out.

Do the regular plugs on the V6 also need the carb/WD40 spray the night before or is that just for the V8 issues?

Picked up all the filters, PCV and plugs.....now I just need to squeeze it in one of these mornings......

Juan, I would if I where you, mine where a little tight getting them out, but no big problem, just make sure you get them threaded back in the hole correctly, I did cross thread one and had to run a tread chaser down threw it before I could re install another replacement plug, AND, dont forget the anti seize on the new plugs before you put them in.

Well, got my 100K maint done this morning, no issues with plugs coming out, and hopefully I snugged down so they dont come flying out......fuel, air and cabin filters went in, cost me 1-2 cowl clips, need to pick some up, and 1 10mm bolt on undercarriage shield, overtighten after fuel filter replacement.

Need asst with PCV, where the hell does it go? Thought it would be ontop of valve cover but the enclosure there looks nothing like the part I picked up. Does the PCV on the sixxer go into an enclosure of some sort? Part has an end fo hose attacthment and what looks like a little breather cover on other end. Thanks for any DIY help for the PCV.......
