Fuel - carb stall issue???
Took the coupe out to strech the shoes out and she stalled out on me.
Crusin all fine and then started to sputter a bit, enough to start getting toward the side of the road and then she stalled out on me. Almost sounded like I was out of fuel but still had over a qrt tank in her. Didnt see anything under hound and after waiting a bit she turned over. I was able to limp home after one more stall out.
Question is what could it be? Havent replaced fuel filter in awhile should I start there? Anything to check on carb?
thanks.

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
Im having a similiar problem.. I start my car and she idles really wierd, very near the point of stalling out. Not actually stalled out yet though. The only thing that looks abnormal for me is my oil pressure is VERY low even though i just changed it yesterday hmmm
Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
on a carbed car in this heat, it may have a tad of vapor lock going on, first check the fuel filter

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
picked upa fuel filter on the way into work then noticed they gave me the inline one the manual shows screwing into carb, mine is clamped down on either end, gotta see if they have that version in the morning.
mjr46, I added a carb spacer a few years back to help with vapor lock, would this heat still cause issues??

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
Hell no. I have a rotary. They run much moter than ur car. And i run just fine. Now when you say sputter. Do you mean if you floor it theres zero power and she just about dies till you let off? It could be becouse of fuel or time for a rebuild.

RTW0223 ur cars FI isnt it? If it is could be a computer issue. If not its a choke issue. And ur oil pressure will be low as hell if she can barly idle.

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
You have a manual pump. When was the last time you replaced it?
Is it only on idle?
Is it when you tip the throttle in?

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
Fuel pump was replaced about 3 yrs ago , it wasnt on idle, I was cruisin at about 40-45mph, when it started to sputter it felt like the more gas I gave it the more it wanted to cut off, i just started toward the shoulder and stall

There is also a screen filter where the fuel line attaches to the carb.

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
Fuel starvation. Trust me in that. Im going through that with my car. Check fuel volume. Should be some info in a chilton or haynes manuel for fuel volume. But first is to check filters.

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
How old is the gas? Ive noticed that since they started using the ethanol bleded fuels they dont last long even when you add sta-bil. Ive really noticed this at work with equipment that has sat for a couple months. Open the gas cap and see if it smells stale?

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
do this. You need a second person for this. Get a medium or large glass jar. Pull ur fuel line off the carb. Have the second person start it. Itll run for a lill bit from the gas in the carb. Now the jar should fill fairly quickly. If fuels just tricklin out from the pump. Theres a problem somehwhere. If it spurts out pretty good. Its a carb or vacume problem

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
#&%$*%^(^, did it again this morning.
Its been riding fine since the new filter was installed and then today, sputter, started to turn around to head home and STALL, she started right up, gassed it a bit and she made it home with no issues, running good again....
What can it be, would this high heat cause vapor lock or any other stall issue? or start looking at the fuel pump???

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
Car is still acting up.
I have done the following:
-check that fuel is getting to carb
-replaced pump
-replaced coil with old one to check for any issues
-blew out fuel lines / cunk found in line between pump/tank , old gasket material
Car ran well a few times after the coil/blown lines, got past the point it was stalling before, thought it was fixed.......then it stalled out again last week on one of the 90+ days. I have drained the tank again and blew the lines again, no cunk this this. Will fill back up in the morn and take for a cruise and see what happens.
Is it time to find someone to look at her, cant think of any other trouble shooting, can it be the carb???
Any ideas of where I can take it? Bob, is this something your familiar with??
Thanks

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
Did you ever do the fuel volume test? Fuel maybe gettin to the carb but there may not be enough volume to run the car. And check and see if you happen to have a intank filter. I have one on the mazda and it dosnt say anywhere in any of the manuels that i do or how to replace it but it is there and mine clogs up all the time.

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
Volume test was done, flow was good, filter in sending unit good as well.
Put 4/5 gal of go go juice in her this morning to try out and sputter, sputter out of neighborhood and back in the garage : (
Fuel gauge reads kinda low but i wouldnt think I need more gas.
Any other thoughts or suggestions on a shop to check her out??????

I wouldnt take it to a shop. Spend the little extra cash and get a rebuild kit. Go to autozone and see if they have a carburator cleaning kit. Its in a metal paint can has a parts dipper and costs like 30 bucks. go online and see if you can find a rebuild thread and go to town. No use taking it to someone to tell you need a rebuild kit or something else and charge you a arm and a leg. Ur car is super simple. Fuel spark and air. No computers or complicated crap. Do you have points or electronic ignition?

Re: Fuel - carb stall issue???
Got the car back on Weds, carb was all fubar inside, they clean as best they could without taking apart, mech said it could be ok for awhile but def need a rebuild, rebuild kit looks to run about $30-40, may have a go at it or just pick up a new carb, would be about the same to buy new vs labor to rebuild, $250-300 gets a new edel.
My current carb is a Edel 1411, which someone ponted out is rated at 750cfm, classic mustang forum has opinions that a stockish 289 should have no more than a 600cfm rated carb, say it would be better suited, anyone here know enough about carbs for an opinion on the cfm rating?????
