1989 vert rear speaker size?
i have looked ALL over and cannot seem to find a definitive stock rear speaker size for an 89 vert. this has been driving me nuts.
basically had my vert for quite a while now, and the whole time i've been fixing the previous owners mistakes. the stereo being a BIG one of those mistakes.
so if anybody has some experience with installing rear speakers in a vert, let me know. for now i think ill use the crap ones that were in there that werent even hooked up LOL

so, theoretically, a 6" speaker should mount up to the existing holes?

My buddy takes apart all kinds of vehicles for Crutchfield's "What Fits" data base.
Here is the info for the 1989 Mustang vert
Radio opening (usable space behind dash): 7.775"
Radio types that will fit with no modifications: 2" tall ("DIN" style) and classic 2-knob (2"-tall shaft style)
Front speakers: Dash: 3 1/2" Front door: 6 1/2"
Rear speakers: Rear seat side panels: 5x7" (6 speaker systems also have Rear seat side panels: 6 1/2")
http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Car/outfitmycar/MyCar.aspx
If you check their site, they will/may show you smaller speakers that will fit and they will include new mounting brackets to work in your car.

Yep, 5x7, Ford used oddballs. I even have a set of Pioneers from my old 92 when I sold it sitting here somewhere.

i could be wrong, but i believe the later model verts (the ones where the speakers by the rear seats had visible grills) had 5x7s, but for the '89 (can't speak for any other year) it appears to be a round speaker opening.
For anyone who's not a vert guy, i have the rear speakers that are covered by the carpet, not the ones with the rear window switch in the grill.
i didnt even know there was rear speakers there til i took the back seat out to wire my sub about a year ago haha.

Well, the "open" area may "look" round, but use the 5x7?.... Dunno. If you can pull the speaker out and measure the mounting holes on the grill (L x W, C-C)) on it I'll check against my speakers. Mine were in a hatchback, really can't see Ford doing different ones there in the vert, except maybe using another set of round ones like the door???

Wasn't hard to get to at all. Pull the rear seat, then pull the interior panels. Granted, I couldn't tell you how to remove the stock speakers because mine already had aftermarket ones that were just sitting in there.

Re: 1989 vert rear speaker size?
Ok, i made the mistake of listening to the guy at best buy (knew better, but took his word for it...) and bought 6x8s. Maybe those will fit in a hatch or coupe, but they WILL NOT fit a vert without some serious modification. So i guess i'm off to best buy to return these, and hopefully find some that will fit. ill take pics and post them after i put my interior back together and take it apart again. I'm thinking 5.25" round, but i guess we'll see what happens. Good luck, here i go!!!

Re: 1989 vert rear speaker size?
I replaced mine like I said with 6 in rounds. They fit but tight to the door side. Also each make has a different cone so could provide more room

That's what I'm buying next. I went to best buy yesterday 3 times I think. NEVER listen to anyone there. 6x8s didn't work (too deep), and 5.25s were too small. Guess I'm gonna bite the bullet and buy the 6" ones. What brand did you use? Id like pioneers, since the rest of my speakers are those, but as long as I get my speakers in, I'm not too concerned about the brand.
On another note, has anyone heard of MDS speakers? Those were the brand I took out.

Funny you say that. I've never heard anything but good stuff about kenwood products.

Do you have clearance issues with the windows?
I still haven't got mine in. Waiting for the extra cash, and the right size.

Re: 1989 vert rear speaker size?
i dont know what you mean with clearances..I've had both windows up with help....now 1 motor seems to be done and both windows are real shaky and in the down position..i need to get one stubborn rivet out so i can go further on this project..been too hot to even go in the garage here lately.I will post up what i find once the nasty rivet is out..
